Getting a Business Register Number — The ABR Form, Explained

The ABR form registers your organisation for a Business Register Number (BRN) — the identifier the traffic department uses for a company, close corporation, or other organisation, separate from its CIPC registration.

It's a PREREQUISITE form: your organisation needs a BRN before it can act as a company party on almost any other eNaTIS form — buying or selling a vehicle, registering one, licensing one. If you don't have one yet, this comes first.

TrafficForms fills the ABR in for you from your own documents.

What the ABR form is

ABR stands for Application and Notice in respect of Business Register Number. It's the official form an organisation uses to apply for a Business Register Number, request a duplicate of an existing certificate, or notify a change of particulars (such as an address or name change) for a number it already holds.

The applicant is always an organisation on this form — a public company, a company not for gain, a private company, a close corporation, or another organisation type. There's no individual-applicant path.

When you'll need it

  • Your organisation doesn't yet have a Business Register Number and needs one before it can transact with the traffic department — buying, selling, registering, or licensing a vehicle in the organisation's name.
  • You already have a BRN but lost the certificate and need a duplicate.
  • Your organisation's registered particulars have changed — a new address, for instance — and the traffic department's record needs updating.

What you'll need

  • Your organisation's identity document. If this is a first-time application, that's your CIPC registration certificate (CK1/CK2/COR14.3) — you won't have a BRNC yet, since that's what this form gets you. If you're requesting a duplicate or a change, either document works.
  • Identification for the proxy signing on the organisation's behalf — Smart ID Card, green barcoded ID book, or passport. A legal entity can't sign for itself.
  • Identification for the representative attending in person, if that's a different person from the proxy.
  • Proof of residential address, optional. A municipal utility bill, bank statement, or similar document works. It's not required, but it lets us auto-fill your address instead of leaving it for you to type.

How TrafficForms helps

Upload your organisation's identity document and the proxy's (and representative's, if different) ID. TrafficForms reads them and completes the ABR for you.

No documents on hand? You can type the details in yourself instead. Same form, same result.

You review it, adjust anything, preview it, and download it ready to print and sign.

Your source documents are deleted the moment they're read. Nothing is stored, and nothing is submitted on your behalf.

What to bring with you

The ABR form doesn't call for a photograph or a thumbprint — bring your usual identification and this completed form to the traffic department counter.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a BRN and my CIPC registration?

Your CIPC registration (CK1/CK2/COR14.3) establishes your organisation as a legal entity. The Business Register Number is a separate identifier the traffic department itself uses — this form is what gets you one. You'll generally need your CIPC registration on hand to apply for it.

Can an individual use the ABR form?

No — the applicant on this form is always an organisation. An individual acting in their own capacity doesn’t need a Business Register Number.

Do I need a photograph or thumbprint for the ABR?

No — the ABR form doesn't have a space for either. Bring your usual identification instead.

What if I've lost my Business Register Number certificate?

The ABR form covers a duplicate-certificate application as one of its three transaction types, alongside a new application and a notice of change of particulars.

Is the ABR the form to register my company with the traffic department?

Yes — the ABR gets your organisation a Business Register Number (BRN), the identifier the traffic department uses for a company or close corporation, separate from your CIPC registration.

Not a registered company or CC? See the ANR guide.
