Getting a Traffic Register Number — The ANR Form, Explained

The ANR form applies for a Traffic Register Number (TRN) — the identifier the traffic department issues to a person or organisation that doesn't have (or isn't required to have) a standard RSA ID or company registration.

It's a PREREQUISITE form, like the ABR: a partnership, one-man business, trust, church, school, or government body — or an individual without RSA identification — needs a TRN before it can act as a party on almost any other eNaTIS form.

What the ANR form is

ANR stands for Application and Notice in respect of Traffic Register Number. It applies for a new TRN, a duplicate of an existing certificate, or a notice of change — either to your particulars (name, address) or to your acceptable identification.

Unlike the ABR, the applicant here can be either a person or an organisation. It's specifically for whoever the standard identification system doesn't cover: an organisation that isn't a registered company or close corporation (a partnership, one-man business, trust, church, school, or government department), or an individual without an RSA ID.

If you're applying on behalf of an organisation, such as a partnership, trust, church, school, or government body, you don't need a CIPC registration or any company document. Organisations that have those apply for a business register number (ABR) instead.

When you'll need it

  • You're an organisation without a company or CC registration — a partnership, one-man business, trust, church, school, or government body — and need a Traffic Register Number before transacting with the traffic department.
  • You're an individual without a South African ID document or passport who needs to transact with the traffic department.
  • You already have a TRN but lost the certificate and need a duplicate, or your particulars or identification have changed.

What you'll need

  • Whatever identification you do have, if any — a passport or an ID document. Many applicants have none at all, which is exactly what this form is for.
  • If you're an organisation, identification for the proxy signing on its behalf — Smart ID Card, green barcoded ID book, or passport. An organisation can't sign for itself.
  • Identification for the representative attending in person, if that's a different person from the proxy.
  • Proof of residential address, optional. A municipal utility bill, bank statement, or similar document works. It's not required, but it lets us auto-fill your address instead of leaving it for you to type.
