Lost a Vehicle Document? The DCT Declaration, Explained

The DCT is the declaration you complete when a vehicle document has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

It's usually done alongside an application for a duplicate. Two things on the form are worth reading before you sign: you undertake to surrender the original if it's ever found, and a false declaration is punishable with a fine or one year's imprisonment, or both.

What the DCT form is

DCT stands for Declaration in Respect of Lost Documents. It's a sworn statement about a document that's gone — what it was, and what happened to it.

The form asks for a full description of the lost document; the reason — lost, stolen, destroyed, or other (with a space to specify); your particulars, including a street address; and a declaration, signed and dated.

Two things on the form worth knowing

You undertake to surrender the original if it's found. The declaration includes an explicit commitment: if the original document turns up, you hand it in.

A false declaration is a criminal matter. The form states plainly that a false declaration is punishable with a fine or one year's imprisonment, or both. It's a sworn statement, not a formality — worth being accurate.
